S Rajaratnam

he passed away this week. only then did i find out that he penned our pledge. was reading the paper's coverage on him today after church and found myself tearing in my eyes reading about him. he was among the tops guns that edged out an existence for our island nation. he did plenty to contribute to where we are today. what got me was reading that he lost his memory in '98 - 7 years before he passed on. during those years, his buddies still turned up to celebrate him on his birthdays. it must have pained them to see a bosom friend that cannot recognize them. or it could have brought much needed amusement to a man who is wheelchaired bound, not knowing who these "strangers" were that were laughing with him.

i wondered what i would become. i wonder how meaningful my life would mean to the society and people around me. would my buddies still remember and celebrate our lives together when i can't remember them anymore? thinking about it has made it more urgent to live my life differently. i like what Rajaratnam's self penned eulogy says - we are sorry he left. i wonder what people would say when i finally bow out.
